GS-Hydro solution: Hydraulic piping solution for Molikpaq offshore platform

GS-Hydro delivered a special hydraulic piping package for the modernization of Sakhalin Energy’s Molikpaq offshore platform. Sakhalin Energy decided to upgrade the hydraulic power unit of the Molikpaq in 2009. The modernization was carried out by PSN in the open sea where the platform is operated. A new larger capacity CHPU was installed to replace the obsolete unit and the winches were changed from air to hydraulic to free-up additional instrument air for the production facility.

Molikpaq platform

The order came through Production Services Network (currently, Wood Group PSN) which is an international oil and gas contractor. Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (Sakhalin Energy) is the operator of the Sakhalin-2 project under a Production Sharing Agreement with the Russian Federation. The Molikpaq offshore platform was installed in 1998. It is a converted drilling rig that was first used in Arctic waters offshore Canada. In 1998, the Molikpaq was towed to Korea where it was upgraded so that it could be used in the deeper waters offshore Sakhalin Island. Molikpaq means “giant wave” in the Inuit language.

Modernization of offshore platform’s hydraulic power unit

GS-Hydro delivered flanges, fittings, pipes and hose assemblies together with a flaring machine. The working pressure for the system was 3000 PSI and 6000 PSI. The platform’s operational environment created the need for special piping connections able to withstand a Charpy V impact energy of minimum 27J at a -40 °C test temperature and also the piping connections had to be made of steel EN 10028-3 P355 NL2. GS-Hydro manufactured the connections, which fully complied with the customer’s requirements, at its own production site in Finland.

As Molikpaq operates in the rigid conditions of the Sea of Okhotsk, there were special requirements concerning safety and reliability of materials which GS-Hydro was able to fulfill. GS-Hydro’s non-welded fittings were chosen especially because they had been installed on the platform previously and had proved to be reliable during their service. A major competitive advantage for GS-Hydro was that it not only provided the customer with all the standard items according to the specifications, certificates and type approvals but also manufactured special products according to the customer’s needs.
